These books give you those moments where you wonder if you love or hate the book. Love because you know the characters, you can relate to their emotions, or hate because none of the scenarios play out like you want them to. Suzanne Collins is the type of author to reel you in then kill off your favorite character. From an interview she claims to have gotten inspiration for her writing while flipping TV channels when she passed a reality show and news coverage on American soldiers. This I must raise a glass to. I love it when authors can take inspiration from their surroundings. Nowadays, all you see is dystopias and teenagers fighting their way out of it. Then other authors keep regurgitating the same old crap. The Hunger Games series enthralled me, I found it very easy to relate to the main characters especially Katniss. Katniss is guarded, afraid, tense, unsure, exhilarated, guilty, in love, scared of love, brave, and angry. She is one big emotional rollercoaster. Katniss Everdeen who volunteers for her sister is thrown into an arena with fellow bread baker boy Peeta Mellark. She remembers Peeta years ago as a child taking pity on her when she was starving for food in the district. He on purposely burns some bread just so he could give it to her. She hates that she should owe him for anything and quickly where he is concerned shows indifference. In this book there is always something to piss Katniss off, for instance her drunkard of a mentor and a prissy escort Effie. She quickly learns as she goes through training that she must be lethal and that all the hunting she did back home would come in handy. The Careers ( A group of teenagers who voluntarily come to the games for fun) underestimate her and they find that out when she scores an 11 during training assessment. Once in the games she gets beaten up, knives thrown at her, and her feet start moving. She quickly sets traps and gets away from the other competitors. Later on in the game she see's Peeta with the Careers and feels betrayed. She doesn't want to admit she likes him. After the Gamemakers decide she is too far away from the other competitors. They decide to spice it up and light trees on fire and throw fire balls at her until she runs straight towards the Careers in open arms. After escaping the Careers (there is much more to that scene so I didn't spoil too much) she finds Peeta and quickly decided that in order for Haymitch (Mentor) to help them they must play the star cross lovers angle. Who doesn't like a good Romeo and Juliet? It works out for Peeta cause he knows he's in love with her.Towards the end of the first book they defy the Capital. Which makes them super super angry. The books in this series just get better and better, action filled, romance, killer monkeys and pearls. All make you want to keep reading. And lets just say the ending was fantastic. Highly recommend putting this on your reading list.
Love always,
